Where the Band Stands, April Edition

So we pretty much have our practice every Friday night, and it still surprises me how much we get accomplished in each session.  "Waiting" is pretty much done and done.  "No Complications" and the-other-song-whose-codename-I'm-not-allowed-to-say-or-Collins-will-never-forgive-me are still both very fluid and change with each time we run through them, but they're solidifying nicely - I even catch myself whistling them once in a while.

We've started to work on a few covers, but we're going to keep those to a minimum (despite the fact that the list of covers we'd like to perform keeps growing!).  Elden has an entire catalog of tunes he's written over the past few years that we're starting to go through and decide which of them would work out best for the band since we're not neccessarily a metal band (despite the fact that each song we play keeps getting harder and faster).

It's my hopes that in the next couple weeks we'll be able to get a recording rig for the drums and upload a few clean copies of the songs we're working on.  We've got a few mixdowns made already that Elden has thrown together, but it's not the same as the live song, of course.

State of the Band, March 28

Had our first full session last night, and man what a thrill it was to hear the drums live!  I had a shit-eatting grin on my face for the first half hour.  We hammered out "Waiting" and got to work on the new tune which, until Collins comes up with something better, is refered to as "Grampas Guitars" (spoke in broken Norwegian).

I've attached the last recording of "Waiting".  It begins, as just about every track does, with us joking around.  The vocals come in and out as I'm trying to play bass and keep the microphone near me, and I'm pretty sure that before the second verse there's a couple misplayed notes - oh, and the recording is awful considering it's recorded off of a laptop sitting in the center of the room surrounded by amps and drums.  I'm explain all this because it's our first public offering, and I want all three of the people coming to this site to know in advance that this is far from studio quality!  Smile

(Current) Lyrics for "Waiting":

This eternal optimist
Raised in a world of separatists
With a fairy-tale mentality
Won't happen to me, can't happen to me

I'm afraid to ask, but I have to know
Was it all a dream or an elaborate show
The curtain rises as I take a bow
Finally found my voice; is it my life now?

Times have come that I can't resist
Found a gag pressed to my lips
Still I responds without my fists
Cause I'm the eternal optimist

I'm afraid to ask, but I have to know
Was it all a dream or an elaborate show
The curtain rises as I take a bow
Finally found my voice; is it my life now?

Collision

I'm really excited about tonight.  If all goes well, this'll be our first practice with all members present.  Last Friday night was going to be a general meet and greet but Real Live got in the way.  Since we were mostly just planning on getting together and seeing the garage we didn't grab much equipment: couple amps, guitars and bass.  The expected one hour of face time became four hours of practice, albeit limited by only having two amplifiers.

Last night Josh and I hauled the rest of his (considerable amount of) equipment to the garage and set everything up for a sound check.  Or two.  Or six.  Unsurprisingly we played together for about three hours, again mostly working on Waiting.

I just sent out an SMS message to everyone as a reminder.  Lastly, the forums are coming along slowly - not too much of a fan of the theme used, and while it's easy to add an audio file as an attachment I'm disappointed that the ability to stream them is broken at the moment (broken by the developer, no me).

Almost there

Okay, I've got the site mostly to where I want it.  I'm going to need to rethink the idea of using the Book Module as a project list.  Honestly, it makes perfect sense, but requires explanation and then strict adherance to arbitrary rules (like renaming a song with the date yyyy-mm-dd first and always remembering to parent the audio node to the book page).

I want it to be as easy as a forum.  And lo, I'm off to try to adapt the Forum Module for use as a Song Book.

And, by the way, I've just found out (was reminded) that the tune I've been calling Project J already has a name.  It's called "Waiting".  I am an ass.
